About NSS
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage. Today, NSS has more than 3.2 million student volunteers on its roll spread over 298 Universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorate of Vocational Education all over the country. From its inception, more than 3.75 crore students from Universities, Colleges and Institutions of higher learning have benefited from the NSS activities, as student volunteers.
National Service Scheme provides the students an opportunity to understand the community; identify its needs and problems as well as the solutions in which they can be involved by assuming social and civic responsibilities. NSS also provides students with the opportunity to apply their education in finding practical solutions to the problems faced by the individuals and the community at large. NSS aims at arousing social consciousness of the youth with an overall objective of personality development through community service. NSS enables students to participate in various programmes of social service and national development, and to help the community.
Objectives of NSS
- Understand the community in which they work
- Understand themselves in relation to their community
- Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
- Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
- Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
- Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
- Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
- Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
- Practice national integration and social harmony

Roles and responsibilities of committee members
- Constitution of NSS Advisory Council
- Planning and executing NSS Programmes for the year
- Developing student’s personalities through community service.
- Sending the report to local newspapers and to the Collage website after the conduction of each and every event.
- Providing students with a platform for community work and developing a sense of involvement in the task of Nation building.
- Conduct of the Annual NSS Special camp.
- Working with Red Ribbon club to catty out activities of the RRC, such as blood donation camp, AIDS awareness sessions etc.
- To give the annual budget to meet the yearlong expenditure.

Roles and responsibilities of Student Co-ordinators
- He/she co-ordinate the NSS activities in accordance with the volunteer’s ability and community demands.
- He/She to coordinate various external resources available in the forms of government services, welfare agencies and voluntary organizations for the success of the NSS Programmes.
- He/She coordinates internal resources available in the form of teaching expertise of teachers for enhancing the knowledge and skills of the students in implementation of the NSS scheme.
- He/She supervisory and consultative skills should enable students to set realistic goals and see problems as a challenge and take appropriate steps to solve them.
- He/She to provide information about NSS motto aims and objectives, philosophy and activities.
- He/She to prepare and conduct the orientation Programme for NSS Volunteers, explain them about the concept of social service.
